Next Steps

Next step dialogues after the Salt Lake City Religious Divide forums

Salt Lake City has completed a year of sponsoring large and small groups dialogues regarding the “religious divide”.  SLCEC (Salt Lake Center for Engaging Community) is the sponsoring organization for next step dialogues in Salt Lake Valley.

About SLCEC - Pursuing an Integral Approach to Transforming Communities

The Salt Lake Center for Engaging Community (CEC) is a non-profit neutral civic resource and convening center located in Salt Lake City, Utah, established for the purpose of increasing the civic and democratic capacity of Salt Lake City and other communities in Salt Lake Valley.  Leadership and social entrepreneurship are also emphasized as integral aspects of civic and democratic well being and transformation.  CEC is also a mentoring resource to assist other communities and regions develop civic and democratic capacity and to establish similar centers for engaging community.

The convening services of CEC are available to engage the diversity of a community or region for purposes ranging from conflict resolution to visioning, strategic planning and public policy development. CEC provides a wide range of civic and democracy capacity building training and resources, through its own staff and the broad resources of its civic resource partners.

CEC takes account of the intimate interrelationships among the well being of the individual, the community and the environment; as well as the interrelated developmental aspects of individual and civic growth and flourishing. It uses and integrates best practices from many disciplines. In summary this can be called an “integral” approach to community transformation.

CEC is working toward Salt Lake City and Salt Lake County becoming civic transformation and democratic learning best practices sites.  There is a particular emphasis on taking the civic, service learning, citizenship, character, religious liberty, social justice, ecology, leadership and other related training provided to students in public education K through 16 and helping the adult citizenry better understand such principles and model consistent practices. In turn CEC promotes support in the adult community of such training in public education.

The offices of CEC will be located at the Leonardo Center in downtown Salt Lake City when renovation is complete in approximately Spring of 2007 with a primary convening venue at the Glendale Unity Center. CEC currently has temporary meeting and convening space at the office of Utah Campus Compact within the offices of the Utah Board of Regents at the Gateway Center in Salt Lake City.
